ESSAY ABOUT LITERARY

Literary likes study skills that essential abilities that will be taught to students during their time at school and that will be very useful to them in the future.Literature can be defined as written and published works; whether fiction or non-fiction or as the work of an art, which brings about universal ideals and interest.Usually,literature is used in school for teaching how to appreciate literary works.

Literary appreciation is necessary to understand and apply to help students through literature class. Definition literary appreciation is the evaluation of works of imaginative literature as an intellectual or academic exercise. In this process the reader interprets, evaluates or classifies a literary work with a view to determining the artistic.Some literary works that are learned in school like poetry,prose and drama.

Every kind of literary works (poetry,prose and drama) has different characteristic and elements.

1. Poetry

Poetry is an arrangement of words containing meaning and express ideas,experience, or emotion with imaginative language.

There are some elements of poetry :

· Form is the appearance of the words on the page

· Meter is a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.

· Rhytm is the beat created by the sounds of the words in a poetry

· Rhyme is word sound alike because they share the same ending vowel and consonant sounds

· Figurative language is diction that appeals to the senses.It compares two things in such a way that you find the comparison interesting or even a bit surprising

(eg:simile,methapor,litotes,hyperbole).

· Symbolysm when a person, place, thing, or event that has meaning in itself also represents, or stands for, something else

· Subject matter

· Theme

· Imagery is language that appeals to the senses

Ways to analyze poetry :

1. Determining what the poetry means

2. Read the poetry again and find the literal meaning of the poetry.

3. Read the poetry again to find the connotative meaning of the poetry.

4. Take several keywords or phrases from the poetry.

5. Find the symbolic meaning of the poetry.

6. Draw your conclusions.

Characters of poetry :

· Varied in length

· Written in line and stanzas

· Use sound devices (rhyme,alliteration,etc.)

2. Prose

Prose is consist of those written within the common flow of conversation in sentence and paragraphs,examples : short story and novel.

Elements of prose :

1. Theme is the general idea of a story.

2. Setting is the information of the where the story occur and the time of the story.

3. Plot is the sequence of events.

4. Point of View is the different angle to see the subject.

5. Character and Characterization

6. Symbols is the language style used by the author.

7. Atmosphere is condition and emotion in a story.

Characters of prose :

· Written using paragraphs

· May contain dialogue

· Can be either fiction or non fiction

3. Drama

Drama is the theatrical dialogue performed presented on stage, is divided into acts and has many scenes.Drama has same elements with prose and usually drama is taken from prose (novel).

Types of Drama:

1. Comedy is amusing drama and usually has a happy ending.

2. Melodrama is usually used in musical plays with opera.

3. Tragedy involves the hero’s struggling

4. Farce exaggerated comedy, situations are too ridiculous to be true.

Characters of drama :

· Can have staging directions

· Can have a list of characters

· Written to be performed

Conclusion

Every literary works have special elements and students can appreciate them appropriate with characters themselves.
